I am a black women from the UK and after reading some of the threads didnt realise there may be as much racism in Dubai as ive read... Is this true is it as bad as people make out? Racism is in every country but i hate to be made to feel uncomfortable?
I was born in the United Arab Emirates and lived in Dubai my entire life, I can assure you this is a safe place, No racism at all, you will get respect, you will feel safe over here instead of scared, Dubai Police has the streets cleaned up from any crime, so my answer is Yes it is more then safe for you to come and work here.
Dubai is a very safe place and you are highly unlikely to get racist abuse. I have met many people of different nationalities here and most have never complained of any problems. People of asian origin may face a bit of abuse(rare though) but that is just because some arabs and indians don't get along. In general people don't have to worry.
I'm a single Australian woman born to Korean parents, coming to Dubai soon.
Some of the comments regarding racism have alarmed me. They refer to asians as "south asians", presumably indian/pakistani.
Can anyone tell me how asians from china, japan, korea are treated? Do UAE-citizens differentiate north and south asians?

Eve, I am a white American female working in Dubai. Americans are treated very well here. We are actually treated better than most cultuers. Which is sad. I accepted a position here as a teacher and my salary is 3 times more than my cousin. She has been teaching here for 12 years. She is not American. Most people will treat you with kindness and respect. Please be aware, you should not be too friendly with male associates in your office. This will cause a huge problem for you. It is haram for women and men to be friends in an islamic country.
What is wrong with being Southeast Asian? Should being Chinese, Korean, or Japanese mean you are treated with respect, while being Southeast Asian should entail something else. Your concern should be, ALL Asians and ALL people should be treated well there.
My understanding is that in general in Middle East, if you are White or Arab, you get the best available depending on your calibre, luck and charm.
Other nationalities may have to cut sorry figure at times and feel frustrated but since everyone here gets a 'bonus' of one kind or another, normally people put up with racism and enjoy as much as they can.

In Canada and America, people from China, Korea, etc - or of Chinese, Korean, etc background - are called East Asians while those from India, Sri Lanka etc are called southeast Asians.
It sounds like you have some concerns around racism and skin colour, and it would be more helpful to everyone (yourself included) to speak clearly about your concern.

I was wondering whether anyone know anything about working as a Massage Therapist in Dubai? I was thinking about working in Dubai for at least 12 months. Is there much work for massage therapists? I have seen adverts for spa therapists in the hotels but how would I go about applying for jobs?
If your really interested working in dubai, just contact any hotels here in dubai and Im sure every hotels here need a massage therapist. Usually the contract that given by the hotel here is for 2 years but I think it;s still negotiable. I work here in atlantis the palm in dubai but I will not recommend you for applying here because there's lot of better hotel than this hotel where i work right now. If you are well experience massage therapist, Im sure you will earn a lot of money here specially the tips from the guest.

There's an american school here in dubai! maybe you should try to apply there. What field are you in? actually you mention about mixed things?yes it's kind a mixed here, more than 80 percent of the population of dubai is foreigners and the rest are the emiratis. Most of the people here are indians, africans,south africans, arabs like egyptian, tunisian, morrocan, syrian and lebanese. A lot also from asia like from philippines, thailand, indonesia, sri lanka and chinese. A few only from europe, australia and US. Yes it is safe to live in a compound but choose the nice place here in dubai because not all residential area here in dubai is nice, Im sure you prefer a good one. When it comes to clothing! just wear a nice descent clothes and you will be fine! don't wear like americans in a place like california or miami florida because you will catch a lot of attention from the people here specially the indians and arabs because i know they really like white girl with blond hair!hehe. A lot of russian girl here got a arab guy partner which is kind a awful to me but the bottom line i dont care about these people. It is just fine for you travelling alone during the day but to tell you this a lot of indians, arabs are going to catch you by their eye like the eye of the tiger! again they reaaly like whitegirl with blond hair. It's going to be cool for you if you travel with some friends specially the one who knows already about the places here in this crazy dubai. Hopefully this give you good information.
dubai is a very safe place. crime commiters would think twice before commiting crime because the government doesnt tolerate this and will deport them immediately.
women are held in high regard and many praise them. that said, there is the problem of prostitution and one can only imagine what the perception is of those who are in the "business"
