I don't know, but it feels like they can't cope with their own existance!! After being in Britain for a couple of months, I feel like getting drunk all the time as well!
I've lived in england for a year now, and yeah drinking is a big part of the culture there. You don't go out for a coffee with friends.. you go out to the pub, and who goes out to the pub for just one drink?
Also part of it is that the exchange rate is generally so good for them where ever they go that they can afford to drink themselves under the table. *shrug*
