• I am living in the UK and am looking at Central Portugal as a place to live.
Basically I miss the sun, having lived in South Africa for 15 years where I have lived, worked- with and socialized with Portuguese. I like them and their lifestyle and their attitude to life. I have also been to Portugal a couple of times but not for prolonged stays. Despite that I don’t speak the language – yet!
I am about to receive a Uk basic pension and am wondering
if it would be a proposition to buy one of the ruins that are advertised
in the Coimbra - Gois area and do it up to live there. Somewhere within striking distance of a large town.
I’m 64 and well qualified in computers and could work for myself at home or as a consultant, or even building computers; chasing viruses – etc.

Any input from somebody would be most welcome!

  • Bem Vindo!
    (Portuguese translation for welcome)
I am a portuguese architect and director of a portuguese company calleed UTOPIA http://www.utopia-projectos.com/  I have lived many years in Barcelona and in switzerland and believe me, there is nothing like Portugal.
The Portuguese are extremelly emotional, they work very hard and love all the foreigners, specially the British. The only problem you will find in Portugal is the state burocracy!
You will certainly agree with me!
    Até à Próxima! (see you)

  • Hi I currently live in Arizona USA. Im going to school to work with lasers and to be an aesthetician. My mother was born on Azores Islands and Id love to move our family back there. I was born in Arizona and know none of the Portuguese language. How hard would it be to make a move from the states and get a job being an aesthetician in Portugal?

  • Hello there,

I am a professional CV Writer and Translator based in Cambridge.

I can translate and write your CV in English/Portuguese. If you are thinking of moving to Portugal, then you'll need to have an updated CV, translated into Portuguese.

The first thing that any potential employer will learn about you is from your CV and first impressions are important! I can compose an outstanding CV on your behalf which will really sell you as a candidate to the employer. What with the recession it has never been more important to have a great CV as there are now many more applicants for each vacancy as a result of the recent job losses.

    I offer 3 services:

    1. CV editing/Translating- English/Portuguese - This is for those of you who have a CV already and would like it improved. I will review your CV and correct errors and may change the way in which it is written so that your CV reads better, as well as increasing the range of vocabulary used if necessary. For this I charge just 12 Pounds.

    2. CV writing/Translating, brand new CV from scratch - This is for those of you who do not have an up to date CV. I will send you a questionnaire which once complete I can use to compose your professional CV. It will be arranged in a way which makes it pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate. The wording will be structured using good Portuguese/English and all necessary components included. The CV will then be emailed to you. The charge for this is 16 Pounds.

    3. Covering Letter - Portuguese/English - 6 Pounds.

If you're interested in my service, then please let me know.

For further information please do not hesitate to contact me by email:

I look forward to hearing from you,

    Regards,

    Hugo.

  • Another area worth looking at, if you are moving to Portugal, is Alto Alentejo. I lived near Portalegre for a year and found the people, both Portuguese and ex-pats (many from Kenya) all very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Without speaking any Portuguese I successfully purchased a beautiful quinta with 15 acres of land which I ran with the help of family and friends that visited and also the help of WWOOFers. Sadly I had to return to Scotland leaving this idyll behind and currently return now and then just for working holiday breaks to maintain my property. A slide show can be seen on You Tube or go to www.greenshifters.co.uk where there are photos and details. It is a very scenic and historic part of Portugal .... well worth considering.
