I am neither Pakistani or Indian, I am a Black American female who is also sick of the West and what it has done to my people and all over the world. I was considering living and working in Dubai because I know it is a beautiful place with beautiful people. I cannot perceive how any country can be more racist than America. Everyone is prejudice to an extent. But when countries are invaded and your ideals are forced on others because you have the belief that your ideas are better than others are you are better than others because of skin color then you are racist.

I am white muslim expat women wearing headscarf and working with govt of Dubai. I used to to get impressed by emirati women covering themselves from head to toe but all this crashed when one day one COVERED emirati came into my office and started hurdling abuses in arabic at me. Before I could understand what is happening another arab collegue of mine asked me have u hit her car in employee car parking and i was expaining in english but she raised her voice did not reply in englis but took phone to call police.Suddenly she went into lobby of the building and again shouting in arabic...i didnt not understand what she was saying but definitely she was abusing expats.....later police came and one colegue of mine spoke to police....police said i am not at fault and i was let go .........but trust me i am not still out of the shock yet.....
all i have to say is that WITH MONEY YOU CAN BUY EVERYTHING BUT NOT CULTURE AND VALUES........

arabs are the most racist individuals in the world. I mean they fight amongst each other. Remember how all of the Gulf dictators supported saddam and then decided to be against him? arabs are always fighting amongst themselves, because they are primitive (socially, educationally, religously, etc) Some of them are well off fanancially but because they are not smart and they are spending a lot of $$$ on all their wives and bastard children, when the oil finishes soon (eg saudi 50yr) they will go back to living in tents. arabs are also very corrupt! From the people to the government! Finally I would like to point out to arabs that YOU CANNOT BUY CLASS! I mean you could be poor and have class but most of you are rich and no class!

arabs are very tribal, not nationalistic at all (eg lebanon, iraq, etc) they are always fighting and kill each other for stupidities like family disputes. they kill their own daughters (eg jordan) if their own daughter gets raped because tehy consider taht she has dishonoured them! I agree with an earlier post that christian arabs are the most liberal and moderate, the worst arabs are wahabis and exremist shia from lebanon and iraq!

Interesting how Arab's claim there's no racism in Dubai, then suggest that club owner's can do whatever they want. Three points:
1. Racism is legally permissible in the Middle East. No doubt. However, people subjected to it have a right to speak out.
2. If the business owner's are really Indian, I would suggest that they be "outed" by the desi community. A few articles in Indian newspapers will ensure they are held in contempt by all South Asians and.
3. My experience from living in the US since I was a teenager(I am from Bangladesh) has taught me that Americans and Brits are relatively tolerant (the former more so) and many of them have a sense of humanity that would be difficult to find anywhere. However, a large minority of Americans/Brits overseas are scumbag racists who give their countrymen a bad name.

Am an Indian who worked in Dubai for 4 years (2003-2007). The reason i being there was very simple - to make some quick money (legally) for my higher education & get the hell our of there. Fortunately it worked for me.

But since being there and lived there for 4 years let me tell you a few things which every Asian & naturalized brown/Far East people should know before you go there to work. In my opinion white people dont understand the quantum of racial discrimination faced by asians, not even 5 % of what happen down there (to make matters worse a good amount of white people eg. British prefer to read the Independent or Times rather than the local Gulf News of Khaleej times).

1. Racialism is Legal in Dubai & GCC countries in general - Yes you heard it right, its being officially promoted by the Government, Private Departments of the Rulers of Dubai & Abu Dhabi. And for a white (or an Arab) to be at the top (not necessarily & not always but usually) he needs to have more organizing & people skills (i.e to manage the Indians and Pakistani's working under him). I personally know a white guy from New Zealand who was a butcher in his home country, who is now a senior Manager in Emirates Airlines; ofcourse with no further education of skill updation.

2. Its perfectly normal to have Classified advertisemnts to have US/UK/Aus educated people wanted. It should be interpreted as White American/White British/White Austrailain. If any of you Arab/indian/pakistani/Colored American National or British national or Austrailian want to apply/go for interview- my piece of advice is please dont waste your time.

3. Driving - Be ready & willing to be tailgated at all alltimes/any time by arrogant UAE Nationals/Arab Nationality drivers. Dont try to complain. If you are an asian, if u try to complain, there is a reasonable chance that you will be bashed up. And if you dont speak Arabic dont even think that police will help you.

4. Switching Jobs - Not even in your dreams, u think about it, you will get kicked out of the country with a 6 months to 2 year entry ban depending upon the Vaasta (influence u weld)you have.

5. General behavior to be adopted - Keep all your democratic rights/values/norms before you catch your flight. You can be deported at any time (most applicable to indians & pakistanis, the Phillipine consulate/embassy is pretty strong in defending the rights of their citizens). Keep a deaf ear to the complaints and plight of people especially construction workers, always believe in the superiority, strength & great culture of UAE Nationals & Arab people (whilst in reality they were pirates, smugglers, slave traders & ruthless barbarians) just like in times of Apertheid in South Africa. And most important NEVER talk about Islam while you are in any of these countries, whether its good or bad, you can prosectued to the harshest extent of law. The Arabs firmly believe that infidels dont have a right even to talk about islam, good or bad (Arab nationalities are to be feared most for in this regard than UAE Nationals).

All these things are applicable ONLY to Indians, Pakistanis, Philipinos, Chinese and Asians in general AND NOT to Arabs, Westerners, People with general White skin including Russians & CIS Nationalities.

Has anyone wondered why Dubai is flurishing among the Arab nations...no actual terrorism incidents. hmmm....do you think on the side they are paying 'people' off to leave them alone. What ever it may be...smart move. Divert attention of locals from any sort of democratic movement and keep Dubai safe from bombs. Good thinking. Make hay while sun shines! The ruler is a clever bloke who thinks two steps ahead.

I would stay away Syra if I were you.Indians are treated very poorly by the local arabs and european expatriates alike. I worked here in the past and I would never return. Racism is rife here towards us Indians and it is the westeners take on the mentality of the arabs and don't think twice about being racist towards asians. Something they wouldnt dare to do in their own countries. This is just sound advice from a person who has first hand experiance, and I wouldn't want a fellow Indian to go through what I went through.

Hey, I got a job offer to work in Dubai that I'm currently considering. I'm white (I dont normally specify my race but it seems important here) and from the UK. My girlfriend is Chinese and we are both in the same industry, and considering moving to Dubai together for 2-3 years.

She's read alot about racism towards Chinese people in the UAE and I'm wondering how much of it is true. From reading above, most of it seems directed towards black and south asian people. So I assume there is an element of truth in her research?

Also I'm concerned, as obviously we aren't married, what sort of reaction this will get in the UAE. We are both respectable people that have traveled and are understanding of other cultures, but I wouldn't like us to be judged badly because we're not married.

I'm not a typical brit (the fact that I don't drink is a good example of this)

We're both 24, and I have a good habit of studying languages when I live in a new place. She speaks 4 languages already, so I expect us to pick up basic arabic quite quickly.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Arabs are especially nice to us Sri Lankans in general, so are the British and US expatriates, both white and dark. However, I've heard stories about racism in many areas, mostly towards Indians. There were times when several people mistook me for an Indian and treated me harshly until I specifically mentioned I'm Sri Lankan, which turned the tables immediately - go figure.

I'll only be in this country until my Aussie PR comes through, so I'm not too worried about racism. It's accepted here and sadly, if you are incapable of dealing with it and bearing it all in silence, it's best to just leave for greener pastures. Dubai is simply a place to earn lots of money, in comparison to how much you would earn back in your own country.

For a country with an 80% expatriate population, UAE certainly could learn to accept the fact we all have to exist in harmony somehow, if the economy is to flourish forever. After all, it's the very people they discrimante against that do all the work at a procedural and operational level.

All this talk of the UAE being a country full of hatred makes me laugh. The few instances of racism that occur here are being made out to be a serious issue,and on a grand scale. I am white and I have done many business ventures with the local arabs and I can say they talk to Pakistani and Indian labourers just the same way as a european would treat a labourer in their own country. I have not seen any racism towards the labourers here. Dubai is growing and will continue to grow, why else are expatiates buying homes here? Everything is provided for here and the beaches are amazing. I have lived here for 9 years now and I plan to stay and retire here.I certainly don't wish to go back to live in wet and gloomy Britain.

Hi all,
I'm a black British born guy from London with a really good job opportunity in Dubai.

I live a pretty arty, cosmopolitan life in London, with Jamaican parents and close friends from all over the globe. And am totally aware of the subtleties of racism. And generally don't stand for bigotry and bullying on any level.

I've always had great admiration and respect for all cultures. And have never really experienced any truly disturbing racism personally. Though after reading the comments on here I'm now concerned if a good job and loads of sunshine is really worth my having to deal with attitudes that strike me as pretty disgusting and out dated.

I'd be pleased to hear from anyone who can give me an honest opinion on what to expect in Dubai as black westerner. I'm not a timid person, quite out going and in no way see myself, my Britishness, or Black background as inferior to anything. Britain does have it's faults, but it's also a great place to be. I was hoping that Dubai and its people also had something positive to offer for all!

All comments/advice good or bad really appreciated - before I book that flight!

Not interested in knowing what people think privately, more interested in knowing their actual responses to race on a general day to day level. And yes, selfishly in my case, black people and black westerners in Dubai.

i.e. Are they, for the most part:
A) Tolerant, friendly, hospitable, full of hugs and high-fives?
Or
B) Abusive, insulting, face to face confrontational, and angry spitting in one’s path?

Don't really want to be arguing or having defend myself all the time. And I'd be seriously gutted to fall out with anyone from anywhere whilst I’m there. Though turning the other cheek or entertaining fools is also not an option either. Damn!!
