German health insurance abroad

My elderly mother in law is German and is coming to the US for a minimum 90 day stay. Is her government health insurance good in the US and is there a supplement we could purchase to make it more comprehensive or extend it past 90 days?

A government health insurance is normally valid for tourist stays abroad, 3 months should therefore be fine. However, it might make sense to add an extra private insurance for this time which also covers flights back in case of sickness.
