Hi! A friend has told me about an instituation called "Mitfahrzentrale" in Germany. Supposedly, they offer you a co-ride with someone who's going by car to the same city that you want to go to - and it's supposed to be cheapest way to travel in Germany. I'm a little worried about going by car with someone I don't know at all! Is this safe???
The "Mitfahrzentrale" is really a very German phenomenom. A lot of my friends use it for travelling around - especially since trains are so expensive over here. As for safety - I think you shouldn't worry too much about it. I never heard ANY negative stories on this side. However, it might happen that you get into the car with someone who's driving like a maniac - you know these Germans like to drive pretty fast ;o)
Mitfahrzentrale is really great! I've done that a couple of times myself (as a driver), it's good for everybody, it's abolutely legal, it helps you save money, it's good for the environment, and yes, it is safe.
It's cheap, efficient etc. If in doubt just meet the person for a coffee a day or so before your travel and suss them out. Only had positive experience so far...-I kinda liked one of my lift-givers and am dating him now... ;-D
