European Union driving license holders
Driver’s licenses issued by the European Union States are equivalent to the corresponding driver’s license issued in Italy;
The holder of a driver’s license of another State of the European Union who has residency in Italy has two choices:
1)conversion of the driving license into an equivalent Italian driver’s license within one year of acquiring residency in Italy;
2)keep the original driving license, but have it stamped by the authorities within 90 days of acquiring residency in Italy.
In both cases, the holder of the driver’s license must go to the provincial office of the Traffic Control Authority and make an application on the special form. The holder needs to self-certify his own residency and with a certificate showing that the fee has been paid.
In the second case, the Traffic Control Authority will issue a sticker to be placed on the driver’s license document.The driver keeps the original license, but there could be delays in the case where a duplicate has to be issued due to loss or theft, since it will be necessary to ask for information from the Italian authorities if the license is reissued through your national consulate in Italy.

As regulations change often, we advise you to get an update from the Traffic Control Authority Office closest to you.

If you have lived in Italy for more than one year, you must ask for residence in Italy and get an Italian driver’s license.
