Is it safe to be an out lesbian in the city? I'm a southamerican who grew up in Canada. I specifically would like to know if I parents would have a problem with a queer teacher or would it be best to pretend to be straight while on a year teaching contract. I just want to know if I'd be putting mysel in any danger being an out lesbian.
Well i am new in here too, but i am coming from lebanon, so somehow its more open than here, but still its not that acceptable. i would advise you not to, though its hard to hide it, but its better to be safe than sorry. Honestly, ive been even trying to get to know some lesbian, just to feel myself around, and still that is hard

thanks for your advice. Pretty muchi see that I will have to keep my sexuality a secret or at least not admit to it in public. Which is fine. however I feel like since I dont have very good gaydar that this might make it difficult to meet and identify other lesbians in Kuwait. Although most of my friends are straight I still find that having a queer group of friends help me find a sense of community. Especially since it is likely that I cannot be out with certain straight coworkers.
Any advice as to how to meet up? It be great to network and see if I can make some lesbian friends.

I read that it is best to blend in as much as possible on a forum about moving to kuwait. however I have black hair which but it is very short - no longer than 2 inches. It is sorta fauwhawk-ish.
As a teacher I feel like perhaps it might be best not to stand out until I am settled in Kuwait. I dont know if maybe I should grow it out at little (not sure how much). Any advice? or is it common enough to see women with short hair?

Why do lesbians (who obviously don't LIKE men from a sexual point of view) dress and cut their hair like a stereotypical male?? From the back...you look like men, you dress very unfemenine like - it's almost like you're celebrating manhood by mimicking them (ie the best form of flattery is copying!).
Hello curious, That is a common but great question. There are various ways one could answer if the question were more specific. Addressing the question "why do lesbians dress ... like stereotypical males?" Before answering the question: I am assuming you are speaking of women identifying as (butch or diesel dyke) lesbians dressing in mens clothes NOT transgenered identities. And not all lesbian women dress in mens clothing and have short hair. Ok now in terms of the butch and diesel dyke lesbians It is interesting they are simply portraying a masculine physical appearence. Gender and sex are two different things. Masculine traits are usually defined by a society and imposed on males but being masculine or being male are NOT the same thing. Just as being feminine and being female are not the same. Gender can be broken into actions or appearence. Your question addresses gender to be simply an appearance but women demonstrate masculinity in actions as well. I put gender on a spectrum (I forget this theorest who coined this) so on a line masculinity and feminity sit on the opposite ends of that same gernder line spectrum. A person can sit anywhere on that spectrum for either appearance or actions they have adopted. Keep in mind that appearance and actions do not have to sit on the same spot of the spectrum. I figure that someone dressing a cetain way is what they like (period) a display of masculinity that they are comfortable with and is part of their identity. Again this is only my opinion but I find my perspective changes a little depending on the people I meet. I simply think of gender as seperate from sex. so they look like males because that is one form of masculinity we provide for males. You talk of a stereotypical male I dont know which you mean. there are lots of male stereotypes all having different hypermasculine traits. I dont know that I ansewred your questions but if nothing else I'm suggesting you consider assess terms and various ways of defining them when speaking of sex, gender and sexuality.
Overall there are really attractive masculine women anc really attractive feminine women and various extremes there of.
Maybe also ask why do women dress women-like or lady-like? Things to consider? How we act in like and in various situations to some extent is artiface. When you have a question like the one you asked think to ask the same for the reverse. It is likely that the reason you did not ask the reverse question is because it meets what is expected by dominant culture and ideology. Again something to think about but it is cool that you are wondering. To be honest I dont believe that there is any ONE answer to these sorts of questions. And when there is they are often specific to an individual.

you bring up a good point.. i too am thinking I will be afraid to be out in Kuwait especially since both my personal and professional life would might be at risk. I know the laws there are quite different and I guess I have been thinking lately of whether one could trust that people posting on this forum were genuine in all replies. I might be more inclined to exercisee such risks once I've become more familiar with the life in Kuwait and who my safe group are.
Personally I do not seek to out in public while living in kuwait but probably to a select few if i could find a safe group. Only time will tell. I have come to terms with the likelihood of me being closeted while living in Kuwait. Sad coming from a country like Canada to feel like your human rights are being taken away but I've told myself that I may have to watch being caught.
