How to choose your phone contract and save on calls

Getting a phone installed in the Netherlands is pretty straighforward. First you need to choose the best plan for you - this depends on how much you use the phone. To save some extra cash, make sure you register your Voordeelnummers.

If you want to get a fixed telephone connected, the easiest way is to do is by going to a KPN Primafoon shop; they can be found in most city centres. They will get you connected within 5 working days and the installation charge is €46.58 (as of June 2004).

When you make an appointment at a Primafoon shop, be sure to be at home on the day and hour you are given. The Dutch are very punctual and tend to arrive at the given time. They will not wait and will charge you for a second visit. Appointments are usually in the morning.

Calling

When organising your connection in a Primafoon shop, you will have to choose one of three types of contract:

  • Bel-Budget has the cheapest monthly fixed cost with the highest per minute calling fees.
  • Bel-Basis has a higher montly fixed cost, with cheaper per minute calling fees.
  • Bel-Plus is a package deal on top of Bel-Basis. You can choose various types of Bel-Plus. You pay a certain fixed amount as an extra fee, for which you receive lower rates and free calling time.

What are Voordeelnummers?

You can register up to 10 frequently called telephone numbers, one of which can be a mobile. You get a 10% discount for numbers within your region and the mobile number and a 20% discount on numbers outside of your region. In addition, 3 International telephone numbers can be registered for a 30% discount on calls.

You can register your chosen phone numbers by calling free on 0800 0429. They can be changed as often as you like.
