How safe is Saudi Arabia for expats? I am thinking of taking a 1 year contract and I am planning to buy a flat over there. But my fianc? says I am mad as it's too dangerous.
Thoughts please of any one living there
Thanks

I think it would depend on the exact location in Saudi Arabia. Even if there are a lot of violence in this country in general, there are still some places in it that is far from all the commotion.Tom21 May 2007, 11:47 - Report

Saudi Arabia is one of the safest countries in my opinion. I lived in Riyadh and i havent faced any problems. The best thing about this country is that there are no taxes. The worst thing is that there are many restrictions e.g no alcohol etc (which might actually be a good thing). Otherwise the life there is quite peaceful and very luxurious.Antonio18 Mar 2008, 02:48 - Report

Joshua,
ARE YOU JOKING? Saudi Arabia is among the world's least safe countries and is the worst place you can bring your wife and daughters into. The country is much run on dirty money made from the trafficking of women and children, which is more lucrative than oil. Saudis get their abducted women from USA, Europe, China, etc. Many Saudi policemen and clerics so LOVE the dirty, smelly money from these sordid sources that they are extremely corruptible. To the Saudi readers, I am sorry to say that but it is the truth. Joshua, please do look up the internet on the trafficking of women and children into Saudi Arabia. See how safe is Saudi Arabia. What goes on in Saudi Arabia is really happening EVERYDAY, EVERY MOMENT OF THE DAY.
By the way, if you ever are missing your wife and daughters in Saudi Arabia, DON'T expect the police there to help with any missing cases. NONE of them ever do. Clerics won't help either. The corruptible ones are more concerned about dirty money than about your feelings. Also, they like to keep underground sex trades going in their countries. As long as they get their bribes and donations, they are very happy.
Forget Saudi Arabia, go somewhere else that is safer for your wife and children.Rita29 Jun 2008, 09:05 - Report -
If you were to live in Jeddah, it is reasonably safe. The worst I ever had experienced is having been asked for sex by gay-closeted guys (I'm a guy also so you can see their desperation).
Petty crime is mostly theft and the usual lousy drivers in this country (my car got hit a few times but nothing serious). But the major crimes like murder, rape, etc are very low.
True, if you need police help, forget about them. But as long as you keep a low profile and live simply, you'll do fine and appreciate the simplicity.
Email me at if you want to know more details.Jasper07 Jul 2008, 03:48 - Report -
Saudi is safe, really safe, I've lived there for 14 years before moving to Dubai (safe again), the only thing in Saudi is the restrictions, no alcohol, no going out half naked and similar cultural stuff.
@ Rita, what's your source, because honestly it seems you know nothing about Saudi.S.O.26 Jul 2008, 10:08 - Report -

Rita !!to Rita: I don't know what's the source of your information but be sure that most of what you have mentioned is totally untrue. I am also pretty sure that you've never been to Saudi Arabia because if you did I am sure you would have had very different image.
Believe me I couldn't stop myself from laughing on some of your replies. Don't get me wrong I totally respect you as a person but some of what you have mentioned is faaar awaaaaay from being true.
Saudi Arabia is not a perfect country and has its own share of problems. But it is also one of the safest places on earth to live. I am not making this up, you can see for your self:
Rape rates per country (World's lowest):
http://www.nationma...-crime-rapes-per-capita
Murder rates per country (World's lowest after Qatar):
http://www.nationma...rime-murders-per-capita
Believe me you can walk alone in the middle of the night and feel very safe. The easy life, abundance of money as well as strict law enforcement makes no one to think of theft, rape or any kind of crime.
I invite you to visit our beautiful country and see for yourself how wonderful life we have here!

I am a 28 y.o. female. I have the opportunity to work in Riyadh for one year as an Emergency medical techinician for the King Faisal Hospital. I will be living on hospital grounds with many other expats and medical professionals. I have read up on Sharia law and understand the culture and for the most part know what I am allowed and not allowed to do. I am wondering if anyone can tell me what it is like for a woman in my situation to work in Riyadh and is it safe enough for me to go the grocery market and basic living either by myself or with another woman?MJ23 Dec 2008, 12:56 - Report
