tourist visa extention

i am in SA to do volunteer work, but am here on a 3 month tourist visa since i have not begun yet. i plan to arrange an extension for an additional 3 months, but i read i can only do that once. if i exit the country every 6 months and re-enter under a tourist visa can i continue to stay in SA for my volunteer work?

6 month visa for holiday in cape town
We want to stay in Cape Town for longer than the 90 days allowed - what do we do to get a visa to stay longer.

Volunteer visa
Hello. I am going to South Africa to do 6 months of volunteer research. Does anyone know what I need for a 'medical report'? Do I have to pay a lot and go for the 40 minute check? I have spoken to immigration who just say a letter saying Im generally healthy will do?

Visitors Visa Extension
You can extend your visitors visa for another 90 days (if you received a 90 day visa upon entering). The visa needs to be extended on a tourist visa.
If you are doing voluntary work, you can apply for a volunteers visa for a maximum of 3 years (extended visitors visa category). Technically you are not allowed to work on a 'normal' tourist visa. Therefore you would have to apply for the volunteers visa.
