SPANISH NEWS

Tomorrow is the anniversary of the death of Miguel Angel Blanco at the hands of the Basque terror group Eta, and in line with that the Association for the Victims of Terrorism has called for huge demonstrations against the policies of the Socialist government to undertake negotiations with terrorists. Instead of staging one massive demonstration in Madrid, this time the organizers plan to stage countrywide demonstrations to show the general disgust at the Government’s stance over Eta. Alphabetically, the cities where the demonstrations will take place tomorrow evening are:

  • Badajoz (Avenida de Huelva)

  • Bilbao (Plaza Moyua)

  • Caceres (Plaza mayor)

  • Granada (Puertareal)

  • Huesca (Plaza de Navarra)

  • Murcia (Town Hall Square)

  • Orense (Plaza Mayor)

  • Oviedo (Town Hall Square)

EXPLANATION OFFERED

Jose Ramón Garcia Anton is set to appear before the Valencian Parliament today to offer what he himself has termed as ‘a full and complete explanation’ of what went wrong last week that led to the accident in the Valencia Metro that cost the lives of 42 people. A spokesman for the Conseller stated that during his appearance, ‘there would be no cover-ups and no false explanations’, and that his testimony would also rely on his previous formal training as he has a degree in Engineering.

Meanwhile the 11-year-old girl, who was injured in the Metro accident, was released from the La Fe Hospital in Valencia yesterday morning. This leaves just six people remaining in hospital: Two seriously injured people are in the Valencia Clinic, a 44-year-old woman remains in Dr Peset Hospital, 2 other women are still in the General Hospital, whilst a 30-year-old woman remains in the La Fe Hospital in an extremely serious condition.

CANCELLATIONS

National carrier Iberia yesterday cancelled seven flights out of Valencia and eight out of Alicante as a direct result of the pilots strike. The cancellations forced the passengers to find their own mode of transport, and thus far some 60,000 people have been affected by the strike. Some negotiations took place in Madrid yesterday, but no result has been achieved and the strike is expected to continue as was expected until this coming Sunday.

SEEKING SUPPORT

A delegation from the Valencian Toy Industry is currently in India with the aim of seeking some sort of commercial links with local businesses. The delegation represents eight toy companies based in Ibi, and, with the support of the Valencian Export Institute – IVEX – they are seeking to undertake some production in India aimed at stopping the ever-increasing amount of Chinese imports that have affected their performance over the last year.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Russia announced yesterday afternoon that an anti-terrorist operation had taken place in Ingushetia that had resulted in the death of Shamil Basayev, the military head of the Chechen guierillas, and the man said to be responsible for the Beslan school siege in which 330 people died – half of them children. A brief statement from the FSB Police fotrce revealed that Basayev was apparently intent on staging some sort of terrorist action next weekend during the G8 summit that is set to take place in Russia this coming weekend.

An explosion in a four storey building in Manhattan’s Upper East Side yesterday resulted in injury of five fire fighters and five other people. The building, which contains several medical clinics and a beauty parlor, is set in one of the most exclusive area of Manhattan. Sources have stated that the explosion was probably caused by gas being turned on after one of the doctors who has a clinic in the building stated he was intent on committing suicide. White House spokesman Tony Snow started that the explosion ‘was absolutely not the result of terrorist actions’.
