Primarily the professional must hold a Degree in Medicine and Surgery, which establishes him/her as a Doctor and allows him/her to practice in general in Medicine. Basic studies for a Degree in Medicine and Surgery are taken in the Medical and Surgical Faculty, with a demanding training programme lasting 6 years. On passing this phase the Doctor can only practise in the general aspects of medicine.
To become a Specialist the graduate must then pass a national exam to enter specialist hospital training, called M.I.R. (Medico Interno Residente). This stiff examination takes place annually and gives rise to the learning posts in Public Hospitals in which the Doctor can achieve a suitable level.
Having passed this exam the specialist programme of M.I.R. period begins which, in the case of Plastic Surgery, lasts 5 years. During this time the professional works exclusively as an assistant with training in emergency and critical medicine, general surgery, surgical specialities and plastic surgery. Through continual assessment the professional gradually acquires responsibilities within the field of plastic surgery, and at the end of this period may obtain the qualification of Specialist in Plastic, Cosmetic and Reparative Surgery.
Optionally, and for those doctors wishing to practise Cosmetic Surgery, a period then ensues during which a more intense specialization is undertaken in private clinics dedicated to this field whilst simultaneously attending numerous courses and congresses dedicated to the same speciality. The objective of this period is to learn all the techniques in Cosmetic Surgery, essentially the application of procedures relating to Plastic Surgery but for Cosmetic purposes.
The only Speciality legally recognised to practise Cosmetic Surgery is that of Plastic, Cosmetic and Reparative Surgery.
To practise Medicine in Spain it is necessary to hold a Degree in Medicine and Surgery and to be registered in one of the Medical Associations in the different provinces of the country. Being registered does not guarantee that the doctor is legally able to practise a speciality. To specialise other requirements have to be met.
To practise as a Specialist, particularly as a Plastic Surgeon, the professional must have his/her national title as a Specialist in Plastic, Cosmetic and Reparative Surgery registered in their Medical Association (it is not sufficient to have a title from an unauthorised source outside the European Community). This qualification should be available to show a patient if requested.
Optionally, the professional can belong to the Scientific Society recognised by the Ministries of Health and Education and by the Medical Associations as representational of their speciality. This qualification is not a legal requirement but it is recommendable to be guaranteed by the medical bodies. The Spanish Society for Plastic, Reparative and Cosmetic surgery (S.E.C.P.R.E.) is officially recognised and represents Plastic Surgeons in Spain, both at home and abroad.
All our treatments are performed by Plastic Surgeons.
Finally, it is the professional career, the prestige and the name of each professional that guarantees excellence in the practise of Cosmetic Surgery. This is something that no administrative institution can provide. Belliance goes to great lengths to obtain the services of the best Plastic Surgeons for the benefit of their clients. Criteria applied against the evaluation of our Specialists are:
