SPANISH NEWS

The Government’s policy of undertaking talks with Basque Terror Organization Eta appeared to be in some considerable disarray after three masked men, claiming to be members of the group, appeared at a demonstration in the Basque country, drew their weapons and fired them into the air. This has been seen a sign of exasperation on the part of the terrorist group that the talks appear to have bogged down, and a later statement attributed to Eta stated that the terror organization was giving the Socialist Government until the end of next month for the talks to progress, otherwise the ceasefire would be ended

PRINCESS PREGNANT

The Spanish Royal House revealed yesterday that The Prince and Princess of the Asturias are expecting their second child next May. The brief announcement was made via SMS to those journalists accredited with the Royal House, and it was for that reason that last night, Princess Laetizia did not attend the state banquet offered to visiting Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva, but most of her daytime appointments are expected to go ahead as usual. Legal experts have expressed the opinion that an alteration of the Spanish Constitution becomes more important than ever in the light if this new pregnancy,, as currently, under article 57.1 only male heirs may accede to the throne of Spain.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Mass illegal immigration from Africa to Europe is causing real hardship for countries such as Malta, the nation’s Foreign Affairs Minister told the General Assembly today as he called for greater support from other United Nations Member States to share the burden. Speaking at the Assembly’s annual debate in New York, Michael Frendo said Malta and other arrival countries needed help not just to absorb the economic and physical cost of receiving the asylum-seekers, but to tackle the criminal groups that “are taking advantage of the aspirations of human beings who have lost all hope.” He urged the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist with the resettlement of refugees, noting that Malta had the second highest number of asylum applications last year in the European Union (EU).
