Madrid TV station TeleMadrid yesterday broadcast a documentary in which it was clearly shown that the illegal immigrants kept in centres in the canary Islands can escape with ease, and then immediately run off. The last week, over a hundred of these incidents have been reported, but the police have apparently been ordered not to make any written reports about this, according to the station. The documentary also revealed that only six policemen keep watch over 3,000 ‘illegals’. In the meantime, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba stated that the almost continuous arrival of craft with immigrants on board in the Canary Islands ‘is coming to an end’, but the police trades union also warned that the patience of its members over these immigrants ‘is also coming to an end’.

The Berlin opera house Deutsche Oper yesterday reconfirmed its intentions to remove from its autumn programme an opera called “Idomeneo” out of fear of Islamist violence. German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble stated that the decision was ‘completely unacceptable, as one should not be afraid of possible threats’. The director of the opera house stated that he had to take into consideration the health and safety of his workers as well as th public, and admitted that he had received a number of threats after announcing the opera in his fall programme. “Idomeno” was composed by Mozart, but the action was altered by dramatist Hans Neunfels, which resulted in Mohammed, Jesus Christ, Buddha and Neptune all being decapitated. It was first performed at the Deutsche Oper in March 2003.
