SPANISH NEWS

With Judge Baltasar Garzon making judgements over any possible relationship between the March 11 bombers and the Basque terror organization Eta, the political situation still seems filled with uncertainty. This follows from Antonio Camacho, the No 2 in the Interior Ministry stating that his department would be ‘implacable against any conduct inside or outside police institutions that call into question the professional conduct of the police’. Meanwhile, the lawyers for the three inspectors have launched an appeal against Judge Garzon’s decision, stating that he was not legally competent to deal with their case, and several other associations have made an official complaint to the judges’ federation CGPJ that has now been forced to open en enquiry. In the meantime, the Interior Ministry presided over a ceremony in Toledo in which the security escorts who lied over the aggressions against Jose Bono received a decoration.

As associations linked to Eta get more and more violent inside the Basque Country, the French Police revealed that it had uncovered two arms caches belonging to the terror group, containing weapons, ammunition, chemical products and a vast amount of documentation. The cache hidden close to St-Jean-Pied-De-Port near the Franco/Spanish border, police came across three assault rifles, two machine guns and two automatic pistols, whilst at another location in Peyrehorade, some 75 Kms from the Spanish border, police discovered an enormous amount of false Spanish and French identity papers and driving licences.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

The third school shooting in less than a week took place yesterday in a one-room school in Nickel Mines in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania – the heart of the Amish Country. Police sources stated that the shooter was Charles Carl Roberts IV, a 32-year-old truck driver, who tied up all the girls in the class aged between 8 and 13, and shot several of then execution-style in the head, leaving three dead at the scene. He later turned the weapon on himself. However, the death toll could well rise as a large number of students are in various hospitals suffering from gunshot wounds, and many of these are said to be in a critical condition. No motive has yet been revealed for the shooting, but the incident has considerably shaken the Amish Community, whose lifestyle and customs were made famous by the 1985 film “Witness” directed by Peter Weir and starring Harrison Ford.
