SPANISH NEWS

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero stated yesterday that he was ‘optimistic’ the negotiations with the Basque terror group Eta, adding that ‘ we are coming close to a transcendental moment’. However, as he was issuing that statement, a scene of a totally different nature was taking place inside a Madrid court where condemned Eta Member Ignacio Bilbao shouted at a judge: “You swine, I’m going to peel your skin off and pump seven bullets into you. We will continue the armed struggle until Euskal Herria becomes free.” As a result of this outburst the Terrorist Victims Association has called for another demonstration against the government’s negotiations with the Basque terror group.

What many insiders had forecast actually happened yesterday, after Prime Minster Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero suddenly appeared in Parliament during the debate over sending Spanish troops to the Lebanon as part of the UN force, leaving Defence Minister Jose Antonio Alonso as a mere presenter. Finally, and with the approval of the conservative Partido Popular, troops will be sent to the Middle East. However, despite the PP approval, this did not prevent the Prime Minister from qualifying the speech by PP leader Mariano Rajoy as ‘a vain and pathetic attempt to justify his past mistakes ’.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Three architects – Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and Fumihiko Maki – have unveiled their designs for three office towers at the World Trade Center site yesterday, including a skyscraper topped with four shining diamonds that would light up lower Manhattan at night. These three designs will now join the Freedom Tower around a transit hub facing a memorial to the victims of 9/11. The three new designs will be smaller than the Freedom Tower and descend in height in a semi-circle around the memorial, and whilst the designs are all subject to alteration, but overall are not expected to be changed significantly .
