It would appear that despite statements to the contrary, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is indeed dancing to the Eta tune. It was June 7 last when the Basque newspaper Gara – often used as a mouthpiece by Eta – published and editorial in which it advised the Prime Minister that he ‘just had 24 days’ in which to greenlight face-to-face discussions with the terrorist group. Just seven days after the appearance of the Gara piece, Mr. Zapatero told the pro-Socialist radio station Cadena SER that a dialogue with Eta would ‘start this summer’ and that he already had set a date when he was intending to go before Parliament and ask permission for discussions to be opened. All this, when the Government is trying to either juggle or hide the latest Eta threats including the latest wave of extortion letters sent by the terrorist group to Basque businessmen.

Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the Partido popular, managed yesterday, for the second day running, to undertake a meeting in Catalunia, without being pelted with eggs or being insulted by Catalan nationalists. During a lunchtime meeting in Lerida, Mr. Rajoy termed the new Catalan statutes as ‘ anti-liberal’. He also had some response for Jose Montilla, the Minister for Industry who is the head of the Catalan Socialists. Mr. Montilla stated that the attacks on members of the PP were justified, but Mr. Rajoy stated yesterday that if Mr. Montilla fulfills his ambition to become President of Catalunia, this would lead to ‘a highly dramatic situation’.

Mouwafak al Rubaie, the National Security Advisor to the Iraqi Government, stated yesterday that a ‘huge treasure’ of documents and computer records was seized following the raid on terror leader Abu Musam al-Zarqawi’s hideout, and added that the documents would give Iraq the upper hand in its fight against Al Qaeda. Mr. Al-Rubaie added that a laptop computer, a flashdrive and other documents were discovered in the debris, ‘ and these contained a huge amount of information’.
