In a rather odd session of the Madrid Parliament yesterday, Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero came out with a somewhat bizarre verbal attack on Nicholas Sarkozy, the French Interior Minister, who has accused the Prime Minister of being responsible for the immense waves of immigrants in the Canary Islands due to his immigration policy, In response to a query from Partido Popular leader Mariano Rajoy, Mr. Rodriguez Zapatero publicly blamed Mr. Sarkozy as being ‘the man responsible’ for the riots that shook the suburbs of Paris and other major cities earlier this year. No comment at all was made over the allegations from the PP that the police had been instructed not to report the numbers of immigrants that had fled the reception centres on the Islands

It has been revealed that Trinidad Jimenez, the recently sworn-in Secretary of State for Latin America, will now not be allowed to undertake conversations with either Cuban strongman Fidel Castro or Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez. However, other sources have stated that following her appointment, Miss Jimenez is the one in charge of the Government’s policies in Latin America. This news was revealed as Miss Jimenez bade a tearful farewell to her colleagues on Madrid Town Council. Leaving the Madrid Socialists to choose their candidate for the May elections.

BENIDORM SHOOTING

Directors from Tiger Aspect Productions and Montgo Productions yesterday held an informal meeting with Benidorm Mayor Manuel Perez Fenoll to reveal the details of a six-week shoot that will take place in the holiday town , and later be broadcast on ITV in February next year Present at the meeting was actor, screenwriter and director Kevin Allen, who told the Mayor that shooting would begin on Monday, and feature fifteen regular actors, 50 extras taken from the British Community in the area as well as 44 technicians, 22 of whom would be Spanish. For the series, the Hotel Los Pelicanos has been transformed into ‘The Santiago Apartments’, where most of the action will take place, shooting will also be undertaken on the beach, in several shops on Calle Gerona and possibly inside Terra Mitica. “Benidorm” will have a total of six episodes of one hour each.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Thailand will end martial law and return soon to democracy and, in the meantime, its interim constitution will provide full protection of civil liberties, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations told the General Assembly yesterday, a week after a coup took place in the South-East Asian nation. Khunying Laxanachantorn Laohaphan told the Assembly’s annual high-level debate that he was grateful that last week’s events had been peaceful and that “the situation has returned to normal within hours.” Promising that Thailand “will emerge as a stronger and more vibrant democracy,” Mrs. Laohaphan said the military leadership would ensure there is “a swift return to democracy with a definite timeline. “An interim constitution will be promulgated in the coming days, with the military being placed under the constitution once more. This interim constitution will provide full guarantees for civil liberties and rights under the supervision of the National Human Rights Commission,” she said. Mrs. Laohaphan said a civilian government is likely to be installed within days, followed by the end of martial law, the start of constitutional reform and eventually general elections would take place within the next 12 months.
