Shooting Caterpillars in Spain

By Alex Browning

The hilarious experiences of an expatriate who was sent to Spain in search of ... she wasn't quite sure what.

The compelling story of two innocents abroad in the depths of Andalucia during the late '80s. Alex and James's experiences, and those of their cats, will have you in tears of laughter - and occasionally just in tears - as they lurch from one misfortune to another:

'Aquí, Señor', said the dowser, 'Here is your water, much water, and not too deep!' The big drill bit into the ground and the cooling, lubricating mud started flowing, shortly followed by an enormous geyser of clear water that had us leaping backwards; no one had expected results this quickly. The head rigger stopped the drill and withdrew it. Ignoring the deluge, the men enlarged the hole with mattocks and peered into it. They straightened up, shouting and gesticulating, so we all crowded around and peered in too, to see a neatly-punctured, iron mains pipe.'

Not your usual account of expats enjoying a life of sun, sea and sangria, but a captivating tale of triumph and disaster that captures the essence of country living in Spain. A down-to-earth, warts-and-all, absorbing read.
