Unfortunately, apart from health benefits, the majority of foreign nationals do not qualify for social insurance payments in Taiwan. This is due to Taiwan not having an affluent security system and a population that depends on welfare for family support.

Health insurance

It was not until 1995 that a comprehensive national health insurance scheme was introduced. This now grants medical coverage for all employees and the non-employed. Employees contribute 1.3% of their earnings and employers 4.6% of their payroll to this scheme.

Entitlements as an expat

The Labor Insurance Program does provide retirement, disability and survivor's pensions, however this is given as a lump sum and despite the unemployment insurance scheme, a very limited amount of the unemployed actually receive this money.
