Depends on what's wrong with you and where you are. The quality of care is generally pretty good, but some towns/cities have lousy hospitals. However, for serious operations the NHS will provide good care (sometimes it will even be the same surgeon operating if you go private).
If you have something seriously wrong, then the best thing to do is get a referral to a specialist under the NHS and see what the situation is. If you are told it may take a long time to get it fixed, then think about going private.
Essentially there is no difference between private and public doctors. You will find that your NHS doctor will quite probably also run a private practice. To his private patients he will not improve his service, but they are unlikely to have to wait anywhere near as long as you might need to for your publicly provided healthcare.
