Payment

Best methods of payment

Many methods of payment are available to travelers while in Singapore, and it is best for them to use whatever method they feel most comfortable with. Different options include cash (Singapore Dollar), debit/credit card, and traveler’s checks.

Most businesses accept payments using credit and debit cards. An advantage of using this method is that you don’t risk carrying around a lot of money. If your card is stolen or lost, it is usually fairly easy to get reimbursed for any charges incurred. The drawback is that some places do not accept cards, so it is wise to carry some cash just in case. Most people carry as little amount of money with them as possible, because if this is lost there is no way of getting it back. Traveler’s checks are also an effective and safe method of payment. The problem with these, like credit cards, is that not all places accept them.

If you are using an international bank or a foreign restricted bank, getting money into the country is not a problem. Minimal fees generally have to be paid, although this varies bank to bank, and there is not much of a time delay. If using a Singapore bank account, there probably will be some transferring and conversion fees when moving your money into the new account. Common sense advice applies when using credit cards. To avoid credit card 'skimming', which is when someone makes a copy of the magnetic strip on your credit card, try not to let the card out of your site.
