Luxembourg’s natural beauty

Discovering the lakes and rivers

Luxembourg has a huge number of rivers such as the Moselle, the Sûre, the Our, the Eisch and the Alzette. Luxembourg’s lakes and rivers offer great opportunities for sports, walking, or just relaxing on a boat ride.

Echternach lake

Echternach lake is surrounded by forest and offers many recreational opportunities such as swimming, sailing, angling, canoeing or biking. You can enjoy the beautiful countryside around the lake, an area of 35 hectares. There are regular buses from Luxembourg City, Junglinster, Beaufort, Grevenmacher, Diekirch, Ettelbruck and Bitburg. Nevertheless, it is more convenient to visit Echternach lake by car. Parking is available around the lake and in the city of Echternach.

The Moselle

The Moselle river forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany. Many boat excursions and cruises are offered during the summer months (April to October). Going by boat is definitely more relaxing than travelling on the beaten track and gives you the opportunity to discover the variety of Luxembourg’s vine villages beside the river. The luxury passenger boat “M.S. Princesse Marie-Astrid” and the new “River Diva” from Navitours  (website only in German and French) offer river cruises following a timetable, but is is possible to book the boats for special occasions, such as birthdays and weddings, as well.

Remerschen lakes

The "Haff Réimech" nature reserve, close to Remerschen, has been awarded "European Destination of Excellence" by the European Commission. You can do a range of watersports, including angling and paddle boats. Furthermore you can discover the area through marked footpaths. Public transportation is not available, so you should visit Remerschen lakes by car. Parking is available around the nature reserve.

Weiswampach lakes

The leisure and holiday centre at Weiswampach includes a camping site and two lakes. You can enjoy a variety of watersports, swimming, sailing and surfing. Paddle boats and life jackets can be hired. There are also routes for mountain biking and trekking around the lakes. It is recommended you visit the leisure and holiday centre by car. There are only a few bus services available connecting the village of Weiswampach to other small villages.

The Upper-Sûre lake

The Upper-Sûre lake, located in the heart of the Upper-Sûre Natural Park , provides drinking water and generates electricity. A beautiful landscape, with waterfalls, makes this region unique. Popular activities are canoeing, cycling, walking and boat trips with a solar powered boat. If you are planning to go by public transport you will have to take the train to Ettelbrück and change to a bus that brings you to the Natural Park. If you’re travelling by car, you should know that the park is accessible but there are no highways near it. It is situated 49 km away from Luxembourg City.

Rosport reservoir

Rosport reservoir is the perfect place for long walks along the Sûre river. Cycling paths and hiking tracks connect Luxembourg and Germany. In the summer water-skiing and rides with a banana boat are offered. There are also watersport courses provided. Public transport is not available. You will have to visit Rosport reservoir by car or by bike if you live close-by. Detailed information can be found on the website of Rosport tourism .
