I lived in Switzerland 1999-2001 I had an auslander B (foreigner permit).
I am white Australian I worked for Cross Air as an Aircraft Mechanic.I have also lived in the Netherlands as well as Australia obviously.I loved the mountains, scenery, very old villages and towns they were beautiful but the Swiss Germans were complete ASSHOLES.I tried to assimilate I even tried to learn Swiss German Its a generalisation I know but its true and all of my expat friends felt the same.First they moved (rented) a place in Basel then couple of months later had to leave (couldnt stand the negative Arrogant feelings towards them.The swiss are experts in Marketing.They have marketed there country as utopia (Switzerland is Racist and the most SELFISH country I have ever had the misfortune to live in.

Steve, you are so right about the swiss. I have worked here since 1988 (Software development and network engineering) and have from the start desperately tried to integrate - without any success and blaming myself for it. Now I am here with two beautiful daughters and wife in this country with beautiful landscape, mountains, villages and rude people. I can't move away without leaving my family, which is a depressing pain. Everyday the Swiss remind me that they carry deep bitterness and aggression. It starts in the morning train where people reserve additional seats during rush hour and only when you ask they will reluctant and cranky free them but some even just say "no" and tell you to find a seat somewhere else, during rush hour. And no, the seat isn't reserved for someone else to come, unless it is a true exception. Outside the train, if you happen to by accident to bump into someone, it is not at all rare that this someone goes into a tantrum, no self whatsoever and starts screaming and yelling at you. As if the bumping was done on purpose!!?? With first such incident I first I stunned and speechless thought the poor person must suffer from some mental disease or similar only to notice months later that a country can't have that many mentally ill people and besides they seem to keep their full time jobs - so my conclusion: it is "normal" here and it is part of the culture here.
If you don't have a higher edcation (university) and come to Switzerland, you will not find the live you want in Switzerland. Swiss people aren't verry happy about foreign people moving to Switzerland (about 20 of 100 People living in Switzerland aren't Swiss). If you aren't Swiss you will have a big problem in Switzerland (no one likes you, don't find a good job because you're not Swiss, bad accomodation...). The most people says they like you and they do - as long as they earn more than you and have the better life. I am Swiss and I know exactly what I'm talking about. I see everyday foreign people doing crap for Swiss because they do it cheaper than Swiss people do it. Of course you will earn much money - but your accomodation and everything you have to buy is much more expensive... Believe me: the best way to live is NOT comming to Switzerland

I'm an America citizen(born and raised in the US). I'm a Swiss citizen (my father is Swiss and so i was given a Swiss passport). thankfully I don't have to choose between the two. All countries have their problems. I think a lot of the anger in this thread is from some pretty immature 20 and 30 somethings that really don't know what they want in life. It's sad but predictable. The other side of the argument is some Swiss trying to strike back. If you have nothing useful to add just go get drunk or high or whatever it is 20 + 30 somethings do and stop this hate-mongering. As for me I live in the US and have briefly lived in CH. I speak the language and am generally accepted. I'm considering returning to CH for good. The US has seen it's best days and is now in a tail-spin towards socialism. That's not to even mention the extreem level of violent crime here and it's completely random. One should not have to fear for their personal safety taking a walk in their neighborhood. But in the US we do. I don't blame the gun laws I blame those in my country who what to teach their illigitimate children nothing but how to get their share of welfare have more babies and never pay any taxes into the system. So here I am, middle aged and sick of all of the problems we've created here in the welfare state. As for most of you 20 and 30 somethings - live a few more years, get a real life, settle down and pay your taxes. If you don't like where you are then just shut the FUCK up and move. I am italian, and I had no problem to adjust to swiss way of life. Now I have a lot of friends (swiss, italians, americans and kiwis ) Its shocking to read all this negative opinions... But I can tell you: The swiss are not racist, they just have another culture. If you want to live here, don't expect a copy of your country or mentality. The swiss are as friendly as italians, spanish, americans ect. I just can tell you: If you want to know a swiss, it takes a little time. For them its strange to make friendship with people they don't know well.
And another advise. If you go to switzerland to earn IV-rent, stay avay. Because if you are able to work, but you earn IV-rent, erveryone will see you as a pirat.
