• Our application for residence in NZ has been approved, (hooray) Can anyone advise a retired couple with a houseload of furniture and other goods what to take with us. e.g. whitegoods, computer, musical instruments, car, general furniture. Our aim initially is to rent a property until we find a house. We would like to travel light but have to be realistic. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

Anyone that is moving will require the NZD obviuosly i found that rather than using the bank i used currencyfinder.co.uk and it searched around for the most competitive rates and best services i.e no commission or transfer fees.

  • Any CRT (old non-flat tv / computer screen) won't work properly, because it's been calibrated for a different magnetic field.

Also, MAF are really agressive about what they will let in - fruit, animal, wood products. See http://www.maf.govt.nz/

  • Speaking from experience,I moved here 16 months ago - definitely bring all your furniture, it is pretty expensive here and there are no good cheap shops such as Ikea etc.

Personally, I would sell my car before moving - they are pretty reasonable here and probably not worth the expensive of shipping it.

  • Hi,

Me and my partner have just applied for residency in NZ. We just like to know how much should we prepare and what other things do we have to know before getting there. We know that it is still a long process but it is good to prepare in advance.

    Thank you
