With more than 6 million insured persons the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) is one of the biggest health insurance companies in Germany. For foreign students and professionals, TK offers complete and comprehensive health insurance coverage for a period of stay in Germany.
According to a health insurance comparison from the German Institute for quality of service and the business magazine Focus-Money in 2006, the German Techniker Krankenkasse is Germany’s best health insurer. The study compared contributions, benefits, consulting services and availability. The Result: The Techniker Krankenkasse offers benefits and service that are above the level of other statutory insurers, but contributions are still cheaper than the average of the German statutory insurances.
The Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) is open to students and professionals. If you have a policy from TK, your children under 18 and spouse (if not employed) are insured for free. More than 6 million insured people trust the services and benefits of TK coverage.
Free choice of doctor: As a TK member you can choose among 119,000 German SHI physicians ( Vertragsärzte) for your medical treatment. Additionally, the Techniker Krankenkasse has special agreements with chosen doctors and clinics.
Dental treatment: The Techniker Krankenkasse covers all SHI-authorized costs of dental treatment, including checkups.
TK-Assistance abroad: If you need medical assistance on a trip abroad, the TK-Service for treatments abroad is available day and night for you.
24h Phone consultations with doctors: If you have any health questions you can call the TK-medical department 24 hours a day. Specialized doctors will help you on any question that you might need to answer quickly.
Offices close to you: The Techniker Krankenkasse has more than 200 offices in Germany that offer personal consultations – close to wherever you are.
Sickness allowance: If you’re sick and unable to work, the TK pays a sickness allowance in case you don’t receive any salary during that time. If one of your children gets sick and you have to stay at home to take care of them, the TK also pays a sickness allowance.
Medical checkups: As a TK-member you can benefit from a wide range of free regular medical checkups and even receive special thank you gifts for making sure you look after yourself.
