Can I work in the US?

  • I am landing next June as a permanent resident. I am a medical doctor but I understand it is very difficult to be a doctor in Canada. My option is to work as an anesthetic technician (i am an anesthesiologist by specialty) which is related to my job. But just the same, the job of anesthetic tech is also regulated. My only option is to go back to school and enrol in anesthesia technology course. Second option is to get a job in the States as anesthetic tech. In US even high school graduates can work as anesthetic tech. Is is possible to work in the US while preserving my PR status?

  • PR Status

If you wish to remain as a Canadian Resident you must be phisically present in Canada for 3 years every 5 years. Furthermore, if you wish to work in the USA, you must apply as anybody else. Being a Canadian Resident does not grant you any special treatment at the US border, so it is an issue of your potential employer in the USA and you. You may also have to surrender your Canadian residency if you wish to work in the USA for more than 1 year.

So... if you come to Canada is because you want to be here. As a Doctor with foreign credentials in Canada you will have a tough time getting to the same status you had in your home country. This is something you must consider before coming here. Many people come here with unbelievable foreign credentials, but in the job market in Canada they are not worth much.

    Sorry for the bad news

  • Thanks

Actually the reality that it is difficult to work in Canada as a doctor is no longer bad news to me. I am already fully aware of that. The reason why I asked if it is possible for me to work in the US is to have other options aside from going back to school in Canada. I really thought that as an immigrant in Canada, it will be easy to get a job in the US. BUt as you have said, it doesn't offer me any special treatment when coming to the US. Thanks for your advice.
