Becoming a citizen of Angola

Three ways to citizenship

Becoming a citizen of Angola

According to Article 13 of Angola’s Nationality Law which passed in 2005, naturalisation of foreign citizens wishing to gain Angolan nationality can be granted through three procedures.

The National Assembly can issue citizenship if the applicant has demonstrated ‘exceptional professional, scientific or artistic qualities’ in their service (or potential) for the nation.

The Angolan government (with the consent of the National Assembly) can also issue citizenship for individuals who have already rendered services to the nation of ‘exceptional professional, scientific or artistic’ quality; or that the government feels will be able to in the future.

Individuals can apply to the Council of Ministers, once the following conditions are met:

  • Be of age (18+).
  • Be able to demonstrate extended residence in Angola over a period of at least 10 years.
  • Applicants must offer ‘moral and civic’ guarantee that they will seek to integrate into Angolan society.
  • Applicants must be able to prove their assets/income allow for self-sufficient living.
