What really are the differences between German(s)??

  • I am shit at languages. I have just been told that I need to move my butt over to Vienna for 6 months. I had a German maternal grandmother so I speak about 30 words of German. I did a single course of beginners at college, so learnt 30 words more and some cases. Maybe I am stupid (well I am), but how different is the German in Austria from anything I might have heard?

If anyone can help, I will be eternally grateful!

  • german = austrian ???

well i'd say at least you know that austrian is different happy)
but everyone capable of communicating in german gets along in austria. just: being too german (!!) might result in slight prejudices from the locals. my recommendation: get an austrian friend to teach you a handful of typical phrases and sayings (including swearwords) and you will be ok. have fun! here some examples:
    - oida, halt's maul!
    - bist du deppert!
    - i glaub i spinn!
try to figure out what that means... to check your austrian.

  • no difference

hi guys, i believe there is not much of a difference, not in language! consider it as a kind if dialect or whatever - inside germany you may also find great differences in the "german". however, the greater difference is with people, that`s my opinion.
