The Danish rental market

Introduction

Most people moving to Denmark choose to rent their accommodation rather than purchase it. Living costs in Denmark are generally quite expensive, though on the plus side Danish properties are usually of a high standard and fairly spacious.

You can rent accommodation in Denmark either privately or in the social sector. Rental accommodation in the social housing sector is available to the general public and is allocated according to individual circumstances using waiting lists.

You can rent directly from a landlord, liaising with them and dealing with all the formalities yourself or use the services of a third party letting agent. With private rentals the landlord ultimately decides who moves into the property regardless of circumstance.

Rental accommodation in Denmark varies from city apartments to houses with gardens in the suburbs, though the majority tends to be in the form of multi-storey buildings or terraced housing. Most of these are grouped together in the residential parts of Denmark’s major cities.

Finding a place to rent can sometimes be hard, especially in the cities. However it is possible to find great apartments in very scenic surroundings.

How to find accommodation in Denmark

Whatever kind of accommodation you are hoping to rent in Denmark, the easiest way to find a place is either by looking through the adverts in local and national newspapers, or through an estate agent. The Internet is a useful resource for searching for up-to-date property listings. As well as this, there are also many relocation agents in Denmark who are happy to advise you during your search for rental properties.

You can put your name down on a building association waiting list, though there is a small fee for this and it might take many years for your name to reach the top of the list. Alternatively you can ask your municipal authority housing office, which often has a number of subsidised apartments available. Of course you can also place adverts in local newspapers, at local supermarkets or online, saying that you are looking for accommodation.
