What you pay in, what you get out

Social security in Ecuador

The social security system in Ecuador is run by the Ministry of Social Welfare. All workers pay contributions, as do employers. The government adds its own subsidy.

In order to claim the old age pension you must be at least 55 years of age and have at least 30 years of contributions. If you choose to retire after the age of 65 the minimum length of contributions drops to 15 years.

In order to receive maternity pay, you need to have worked a minimum of 360 days prior to the beginning of maternity leave. The amount paid is calculated using the average salary earned prior to finishing work, so everybody’s benefits will differ in this respect.

There are also benefits for those who have lost their job, and bereavement payments for those who have lost a close family member.

You’ll need to be working for a while before you qualify for any of these benefits as they’re all dependent on time worked and money paid into the system. If you have contributed to the Ecuadorian social security system, you are entitled to the same benefits as any Ecuadorian.
