Mitfahrzentrale - save way to travel?

  • Hi! A friend has told me about an instituation called "Mitfahrzentrale" in Germany. Supposedly, they offer you a co-ride with someone who's going by car to the same city that you want to go to - and it's supposed to be cheapest way to travel in Germany. I'm a little worried about going by car with someone I don't know at all! Is this safe???

  • No worry

The "Mitfahrzentrale" is really a very German phenomenom. A lot of my friends use it for travelling around - especially since trains are so expensive over here. As for safety - I think you shouldn't worry too much about it. I never heard ANY negative stories on this side. However, it might happen that you get into the car with someone who's driving like a maniac - you know these Germans like to drive pretty fast ;o)

  • Yes,

Mitfahrzentrale is really great! I've done that a couple of times myself (as a driver), it's good for everybody, it's abolutely legal, it helps you save money, it's good for the environment, and yes, it is safe.

  • It's safe

It's cheap, efficient etc. If in doubt just meet the person for a coffee a day or so before your travel and suss them out. Only had positive experience so far...-I kinda liked one of my lift-givers and am dating him now... ;-D
