Health insurance when applying for work permit

  • Hi folks,
could somebody give me an advice?
In order to get work permit from Arbeitsamt I'm required to have a health insurance in Germany.
I've got contract signed, but how can I possibly get insured in German ins.company, when I haven't started my job yet? And starting the job depends on getting work permit?
    My questions are:
    1. Is it possible to get health insurance in advance, providing contract of work to the German insurance company
    2. Do I have to be present in Germany or can I do it via mail?
I'm Slovak, so I still need work permit and I'm pretty sure that without these documents they will turn me down sad
    Thanks

    Hi
not sure if I understand your problem right. If you have a work contract your employer will register you with a health insurance company.
If you need insurance in order to get a work permit I would try to show the contract as a proof. If this is not enough you can pay your own premium (which will be an expensive option) until you start your new job. Try to contact the AOK health insurance they can give you advise and tell you how much you need to pay until you start your job.
Be careful that they don't insure you privately, you will never get out of these type of contracts. When you are young the premiums are low and as you get older they will sky rock. Make clear to them that you need it only until you start your job.
If you need help to contact the insurer in German I may be able to help you out.
