Symbolism of a walnut as a gift

  • When I was in Venice last, a young woman I had never met before came up to me and gave me a walnut as a gift. Does this have any particular meaning(s)? Is it just for good luck or does it signify more than that? What would she have seen in me to think I was deserving of such a random gift? (Mi scuzi, parlo italiano solamente un poco. Sono Americano. Ma parlo francese...)

Hi james. No, a walnut has no particular meaning, sorry. However it is usual to find stalls on the largest squares of many cities and towns (mostly on sundays) where fruit, plants or toys are sold in order to gather funds for charity institutions or a scientific cause (e.g. cancer research etc.) Maybe they had nuts to sell then, but the reason she gave you a single nut remains unexplained...may be she was nuts? happy
