How do Western Kids do well in Japanese Schools?

  • I am moving to Japan with my wife and children for work. We will be in the Tokyo area. My kids are school-age (9 and 14, girl and boy respectively) so obviously they will go to school. My wife and I want them to learn some Japanese... do Western kids adjust well to Japanese schools or to they do better with other international kids?

  • depends

i think it depends a lot on the kids and how outgoing they are. some kids really throw themselves into the culture and others end up more withdrawn. obviously its harder for the withdrawn kids to adjust. i would use that as a guide when thinking about schools for your kids. how much do they like japan, and how long will you be there for?
