Anyone been to cool Japanese islands?

I have been living in Japan for a little while and what to get off the main islands. Are there any little places (out of the 4,000) that aren´t too hard to get to that are nice for vacations? Any good beaches?

ice cruise
I don´t know about the islands, but if you want to be out on the sea there is a neat ice cruise (through the drift ice) that runs out of Hokkaido in the winter.
