Erasmus, Amsterdam Erasmus exchange programme

  • Hi there,

I am an American citizen going to Amsterdam for an Erasmus exchange programme. My question is the following. Will I have problems in amsterdam, not knowing any dutch? I know that for the Erasmus exchange it is not neccessary as the programme is in English, but I am a bit worried about everyday life.

    Any help would be great.

    Regards,

    Henry

  • Erasmus Exchange in Amsterdam

    Hello Henry,

Don't worry about language if you are thinking of an erasmus programme in Holland. Especially if your doing the erasmus exchange in Amsterdam. People in Holland speak very well English, and in everyday life you really do not need to speak any Dutch. If you plan on living there the rest of your life, you probably are better off doing some courses. You can integrate into society without speaking Dutch, however it is seen as weak if you have been living in The Netherlands for several years and still don't speak the langauge.

If it is just the Erasmus exchange programme, you have nothing to worry about.
