The cost of living

Why is Angola so expensive for expats?

Angola, and Luanda in particular, is often ranked as one of the world’s most expensive places for expats. In Mercer’s 2011 Cost of Living Survey, Luanda was the most expensive city in the world. In 2012, it was second only to Tokyo.

Since the civil war ended in 2002, Angola has seen its economy stabilise, and oil and diamonds become its most valuable resource. The civil war severely limited supplies and damaged infrastructure.

The huge cost of accommodation in Angola drives up the cost of living for expats. However, it isn’t only housing that is expensive. Daily goods and services are also more costly than at home for many people.

The following is a list of commonly used products and services and their average price in Angola, specifically Luanda. Unless stated, the figures are from January 2013.
