EU citizens are able to import their car or motorcycle for up to six months into Greece. After these six months, the vehicle must either:
Be imported into Greece and can only be used when it has a Greek numberplate
Be exported back from Greece
Be sealed with customs for six months ( but no longer than 24 months). After that time, the owner should prove that they have been out of the country for at least a year so that the vehicle can be used for another six months in Greece
The procedure for importing your vehicle
EU countries
A Declaration of Vehicle’s Arrival (DVA) form must be submitted to the Customs Authority. This must be done by the owner of the vehicle or the legal representative
A Special Declaration / Custom Clearance Statement must be submitted to the Customs Authority for assessment and payment of the relevant taxes. This has to be done by the 15th day of the month following the arrival of the vehicle
Registration tax must be paid.
VAT must be paid for new vehicles ( vehicles less than six months old or with less than 6,000 km)
Non-EU countries
A special Declaration / Custom Clearance Statement must be submitted to the Customs Authority for the assessment and payment of the relevant taxes made. This must be done by the 15th of the month following the arrival of the vehicle.
Import duty, VAT and Registration tax must all be paid
The registration tax is calculated on the theoretical value of the car but it obviously also depends on what type of car it is and its age.
