Living the American Dream

The open road in an RV

Taking a vacation or long trip in a motor-home is a unique way to experience some of the spectacular sights and countryside on offer in different parts of the US. For some people it’s ‘camping in comfort’, for others it’s just a really convenient way of traveling around without having to be packing all the time.

Why do a trip in an RV?

Many fans think this is one of the best ways to have a family holiday. They highlight the freedom to do different things, for family members to all be able to find and do things they want to do and a great way of getting out and really doing the trip together. Unlike camping under canvas, you get protection from the elements, which makes a big difference. Last, but not least, it is a really budget-friendly way to travel.

Planning a trip

Depending on how much time you have got and your preferences, you may want to have an exact itinerary or, just see how you go so you have the flexibility to stay longer in one place if you want to. There are a lot of places where you can parkup and hook up your utilities, but availability can be a problem, so getting in touch before you rock up can avoid disappointment. You can use a service like RoverPass (https://www.roverpass.com/) to make enquiries and reservations online.

What do I need?

An RV – there is a wide range of different types of rental, consider your needs carefully when choosing as the size and quality will make a difference to your trip. Obviously, if you plan to spend time out and about, this is less important.

You need to think about making sure you will have things like cooking and cleaning operational. Having to keep stopping to pick up supplies (maybe re-buying things you have back at home) is probably not how you want to be spending your time. Make sure you bring enough food. For nature lovers bringing your own or buying a fishing rod (https://www.globosurfer.com ) can be a good idea. Make sure you get a licence (https://www.takemefishing.org) if so.

The rest is pretty much the same as for a camping trip – depending on where you are going, sunscreen and bug spray can always come in handy. A basic first aid kit is always a good idea as well.
