    Deposit regulations vary by province.


    For instance, in Ontario:

    1. Landlords are NOT allowed to ask for a damage deposit.

    2. Landlords are permitted (and it is almost mandatory) to ask for 'Last Month's Rent' - deposit equiv to 1 month's rent value, which would be refunded to you (with interest), if your rent is up to date upon vacancy.


    However, in Alberta:

    1. Landlords are NOT allowed to ask for 'Last Month's Rent'.

    2. Landlords are permitted (and is almost mandatory) to ask for Damage Deposit valued equiv to HALF of 1 Month's Rent value.

    So it will depend on exactly where in Canada you are speaking about...
