  • bank issue the credit cards

In Germany the credit cards (VISA, MASTERCARD, ...) are issued by almost all banks.

(excuse Daniel T.): the most used card in Germany is not VISA but MASTERCARD.

If shops in Germany accept credit cards, they almost always accept both VISA and MASTERCARD.

Those two are the most widespread in Germany.

Offerings of credit cards contracts (i.e. contract conditions like annual fee etc.) differ from bank to bank.

Thumb rule: the annual cost of a credit card should not be more than 20 EURO.

Best is, you ask the bank managing your accout for their offering of credit cards.

    On

you can find a comparison of German credit card offerings (seems, just in German language....)

    Good luck,

  • Credit Card - EC Card or Maestro

If you get an account in Germany you will nearly always get an EC Card or maestro card with your current account. To get a credit card you will have to apply for one.
Most shops prefer EC cards because they are cheaper for them (no fees to pay) You will not need a credit card in Germany as you may need in the US.
If you want to buy goods over the internet, book flights and rental cars, you would need a credit card; also if you want to pay a train ticket on board of a train.
If you use your card to pay in supermarkets etc. you will not need a credit card, just use your current account EC card.

  • Credit Card

The most use is Master Card. Sometimes, shops or BVG (Ubahn) in Berlin, don't take the Visa Card! Be carefull. But you can go to bank to get cash with Visa.
