Living with a French family

  • Hi! I'm going to Paris for a couple of months and thought about renting a room with a French family to improve my French. However, some people that went to other countries told me that living with a family can be a real pain. Does anyone have any experience with French families? Do I have to adapt completely to their lifestyle - or are they normally easy going?

  • That depends on the family..

Hi! I think that your experience will depend very much on the family you're living with. I lived with a family in Caen/Normandy for a month and it was pretty horrible. Very conservative and close-minded people, and we didn't get along very well. However, I also know of a lot of people who got along very well with their families, so it all depends a little bit on your luck. Also, your chances of finding an open-minded family will probably be bigger in a big city like Paris then in the countrysite.

    Good luck in France, Ben

  • I think i can help

I'm living in a french family at the moment actually and it's true sometimes it is pretty hard because everybody needs their privacy and one has different ways of seeing life.i've been in this family for over 3 months now and i'm going to stay for a whole year.
I've noticed that it's really like a rollarcoaster, there are ups and downs and sometimes you feel irritated and think of leaving and sometimes it's nice to be with people and not be absolutely alone.I say go for it because no risk no fun.If it really goes badly keep telling youself, like i tell myself, that there is worse!
