    Exchanging an Out-of-Country Licence

    Ontario Ministry of Transportation Changes Requirements for Crediting Driving Experience for Out-of-Country Applicants
    As of January 11, 2006, the ministry has revised its policy regarding crediting driving experience for out-of-country licences.

    What is the new policy?
    In order to obtain credit for driving experience, applicants from out-of-country jurisdictions, that do not have a driver's licence reciprocity agreement with Ontario, must present written confirmation supporting the authenticity of their driving experience and driver's licence.

    Written authentication of the driver's licence and driving experience can include an original letter from the originating licensing agency, or from the Embassy, Consulate, or High Commissioners' offices representing the jurisdiction. The authentication letter must be on official letterhead and be written in either English or French.

    Who does the new policy affect?
    This policy affects all applicants for an Ontario driver's licence from jurisdictions not having a reciprocal driver's licence agreement with Ontario.

    This new policy does not apply to drivers from the following jurisdictions:

    Canadian provinces and territories;
    Canadian Forces Europe;
    U.S. States (with the exception of Arizona, District of Columbia, Illinois, New Jersey and Vermont);
    Austria, France, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Korea, and Switzerland.
    All driver's licences from another jurisdiction can only be exchanged at a DriveTest Centre. For more information about exchanging driver's licences from another jurisdiction, please visit the DriveTest website.
