I always wonder how such ignorant persons happen to visit other countries. Most of them usually stay where their ignorance is common or at least tolerated. Maybe it´s to pretend with a cool journey to europe, to obtain a ridiculus costume of sophistication to hide the ignorance below. Maybe you guys can explain it to me? Please! I need a revelation!
Well, it´s proved that the average american spends more time watching TV than in school. So it´s not really surprising that realty can shock him. No! It´s no like they show on TV! And no! Walt Disney didn´t design this castle in Disney Land! It actually exists in Germany!
The fact that you compare it with what you had seen in TV explains why americans still haven´t all commited suicide. Just try no to watch TV for one month and to have a look on things by yourself! You would be shocked! It´s not like they show you on TV!

Maybe it is time that some of you buy a mirror and have a long hard look and then think about what you are actually seeing.
People usually see what they want to see and will find ugliness everywhere , including in their own lives.
Anywhere can be beautiful as long as you know how to look.
What you see is usually a reflection of yourself.

yeah germany blows a big one, but so does the rest of the world, although i can really imagine that germany is difficult for foreigners to live in, it lacks actual diversity and the diversity it has to offer is generally coined with xenophobia, i can also see why especially east europeans would feel unwelcome here, i guess that's just one of the remnants of the cold war. not all of germany's inhabitants are nazis, but there is clearly a latent sentiment tending towards fascism among a lot of people there, i guess it has to do with upbringing. concerning germany being ugly, on a whole it's more uneventful, but there are some really pretty places.. but as anywhere in the world, be it china or france, they're usually tourist traps. but as a general rule, the world is a place packed with ignorant f***tards, and you'll always approach a certain amount of ignorance and narrow-mindedness.

cloggy: Interesting reply, but have you really done your research? Or is this more America Bashing? Seems to be the trend in the world today.

Let's go over some FACTS, China is the most polluted country in the world, followed by India. Again, do your research.

Let's talk about the crime rate, obviously you didn't know that Columbia (South America) has the highest crime rate per capita in the world. The US ranks 24th, with Germany at 49th. Interesting fact, The Bahama's leads the world in criminal executions per capita, US is 20th, wow!

Teenage pregnancy? sorry South Africa tops that list.

Education, do you know which country produces the most Medical Doctors in the world? That's right, the United States. How about Engineers? You guessed right again, these "not educated" United States. Its also funny that we teach more Doctors (who return to their own countries) for the world, than the rest of the world combined. Ask any pilot of a major airline (including Lufthansa) where they got their training, US?

While I was researching my reply to you and the rest of the forum, I also found out that the United States has
    over 4000 museums.

It's obvious that you never visited the United States, otherwise you would have noticed all of our beautiful women. Women of every color and creed. Yeah a few men and women are obese, just like any other country, but when it comes to pure beauty....wow!

Diversity is what make's the United States a great country. Our ability to adapt to anything as a people make us a great people. Our people are our culture. That's why we're the most visited country in the world!
There is no comparison, Germany is a closed society and the America isn't.

I've never been to Germany, and I'm originally from NY, living in Seattle...I'm planning on moving to Germany because there are a lot of things I dislike about the US. Yes, we're obese, our divorce rates are out of control, and the mentality growing up is "sex sex sex" and relationships are becoming a thing of the past here...BUT, i MUST say this. This is obviously biased here but I think the US is definately in the top percentile in an overwhelming amount of accomplishments, not just military either, but in education as the previous poster pointed out. I love it here, living in NY is a little hectic, but Seattle is absolutely gorgeous and the people are amazing. The US has a LOT of culture, from down south New Orleans to New "Yawk" to Texas and up to the hippies and outdoor guru's here in Seattle/Portland area. I hope my move to Germany will be worth it though! Reading these posts have gotten me a little scared! Many people are saying Germany sucks, but I can tell they are probably ill-informed and being typical big-ego Americans.. Seattle-Man,
What a coincidence, we're moving to Seattle from Germany and you're moving from Seattle to Germany! We'll be moving in December, any pointers/tips to give? I've heard that the weather is bad?

If you are moving here as a civilian, i.e. not working for the g'ment, prepare yourself for the taxes. The average German pays around 40% (my wife); so I speak from experience. Also prepare youself for the "Open Sexual" attitude, we as Americans are pretty prudish if you ask me. We can show a guy on tv getting shot 20 times with a machine gun, but we file a lawsuit on a network for showing a boob. German, well most Europeans are very open about sexuality. Only difference is that in the States, it's taboo or underground.

I wasn't my intent to scare you but Germany is a crowded country, the mentality is that you have to walk on the next guy/gal to get ahead. It's evident in everything they do. If you drive to the store, the guy behind you is upset because YOU are in his spot. When you get to the store, they'll run through you to get in just because YOU might buy that last bottle of o.j.. Competitive is an understatement here, common courtesy leaves when you leave the states.

I've been here for a total of 15 years, part civilian part military. I speak German fluently, but feel that it's time to go home. I would say that the attitude towards Americans has changed for the worse since Dubya's war started. Gonna take some time to repair.

Contrary to your explanation of Germany, I'm going to get you EXCITED about Seattle, hehe. Theres no way not to, Seattle is hands down the best place I've ever been, and I've traveled quite a bit. Let me take that back, prerequisite: you love the outdoors, Seattle is hands-down THE BEST. You have all your metropolitan bustling city you want in Seattle, but drive LESS than an hour out of the city and you'll find yourself up high in the mountains with no one around for miles. The Olympics to the east and Cascades to the west are breathtaking to wake up to, and need i say anything about MT RAINIER! She towers over anything and everything, she creates her own weather pattern this is true. I climbed Rainier this summer, if you ever get the chance, please try it, you'll never forget it. As for the weather, be quiet about this, but NO! It doesnt suck, its our best kept secret. I've never experienced a better summer, I lived in Florida and California for a couple summers, and Seattle wins easily. If 3 summers here is enough to be able to give advice, I'd say it rains a total of 2 or 3 days each summer? With the other days being sun and no clouds, light breeze off the Puget Sound...NO humidity! Im from NY and i hate humidity, one of the reasons I could never go back, but out here theres a 20 degree difference between being in the sun, and stepping under a tree into the shade, its great. As for the people-very laid back, easy going, and very very courteous/professional. Being the most literate city in the US, colleges are big here, and the graduation rate even bigger. If your older/which I assume you are/ Seattle's nightlife will be just what your looking for. It has its hotspots clubs, and hundreds of very unique bars and pubs its really one of a kind. But in general, Seattle goes to bed early! Everyone wants to wake up and climb a mountain or something exciting so nightlife isn't a priority to many of us. Compared to other cities, ask a Seattlite what their plans for the weekend are, and majority will have some type of adventure in store. And thats because everything is here! You have world class snowboarding/skiing in the mountains with great resorts btw, and Whistler BC is only a few hours away (Site of the 2010 Olympics) you have every water sport possible, the U.S.'s largest Salmon run right through Seattle, literally you can go to the locks and see hundreds of thousands of 4 foot salmon jumping over one another in hte fish ladders. Theres mtn biking, backpacking and hiking for years and years you'll never run out of things to do. The more I talk about Seattle the less I want to move, hehe, this move is something i HAVE to do, not WANT to do. But I'm trying to get excited about it, so help me out!

    Take care.

There ARE racist and intolerant people in Germany. And yes, we do have a Nazi-Party (the NPD, but not in the "Reichstag", which is actually called the "Bundestag"blunk. There ARE miserable and sad and unfriendly people all over the place.
And yes, Berlin IS dirty and full of dog shit.

But there are also very friendly, very open minded people. Kind people, generous people. And there are beautiful and clean places all over Germany.

One tends to remember only the bad things. But forget about all the good things. And if you couldn't find ANYTHING good, maybe you should take the time and think about yourself. Think about your behaviour, your efforts and your attitude.

I've lived for about two years in Dallas and in New York. Loved it and hated it at the same time. I've met nice people and total bastards. But that's how it goes almost everywhere in the world.

    Tony 10 Jan 2008, 11:38 - Report
  • Where’s the laughter Germany?

I think I like Frisian's reply the best. I'm an Ami who's lived here in Germany for 10 years. I guess the biggest challenge for an Ami to live here is to put on your German hat when you leave the house. I guess I mean to think like a German when you’re out and about, otherwise your bound to get pissed off often and probably be forced to seek anger management courses at some point in time. Yes, Germans don't mind being unfriendly, pushing another with their carts when grocery shopping, or have a problem cutting in line, or giving you bad customer service, or risking your life on the roads daily. It’s a “Me first” culture, just get used to it and stand your ground. Expect someone to hold open the door for you, take a number, you might get lucky.

I know it's tough for Germans to hear how bad we think their service is and how unhappy the majority of people act out in public. God knows we aren’t perfect! But Germans know this themselves and hate to hear it from an Ami and will quickly start mouthing off American stereotypes of things they read in a Michael Moore book. They are obsessed with the USA. They can't get enough of it! They either love it or hate it, but one thing is for sure, they are paying attention to it. Ask them questions about Russia, France, Japan, England, the majority will have no idea. Ask them about the USA, and they will start spouting off statistics. Strange indeed! They want our franchises, our music, our films, our popular culture. It’s them who bring it to their country, not us who force it upon them and make them go buy it, watch it, hear it, as they would like to imply.

But I think every country in the world uses the USA as a benchmark, so if you come here, get prepared for opinions, based on solid fact, misinformation and sterotypes. Yes, there are a lot of jerks in the USA as well and there are a lot of wonderful people in Germany, and vis-versa. But speaking generally, the USA is a much happier place. Come on Germans, you know what your own saying “Typical Deutsch” means. It doesn’t mean anything positive!

For those interested Germany is having a brain drain with a lot of good talented German people leaving the country. Around 160,000 last year alone! First destination is Switzerland, the second is the USA. So it’s in Germany’s best interest to paint the USA black, to give the impression that things in good old, tax the heck out of us till we die, Germany is better and “safer”. The USA also brags about being number one, and we still know are seriously screwed up in a lot of ways. But a fundamental difference between the USA and Germany is we can discuss it and make fun of ourselves, laugh about what screw-ups we can be, talk bad about ourselves and then laugh it off. We then move on. Germans pound their fist on the table for perfection, punish every mistake life long, and never let go. Fact is, Germans would prefer therapy to achieve an unreachable perfection over learning how to laugh at themselves and their real situation, and then moving on. That makes for a lot of sad faces, even on the sunniest days.

Anyway, to form your own opion, you have to go spend time in that county to really be closer to the truth, whatever that is.

Now in germany, I was expecting the first few months (at least few days) to be difficult (no friends. don t speak the language yet etc etc)
guess what. smooth transition as hell. even ended up in an all-german party ,met people and talked. danced and had a great time.
and i find germany really pretty. the houses the landscape, the cafes ....and sorry, but Berlin has probably some of the best new designers in clothes. people do know how to dress, take it from someone who learned to appreciate casual US dressing as much. Now if you came to germany expecting to find warm sunny weather...then what can I say except call you ingorant myself.

so I guess to all of you out there

what you give is what you get

you only see nationalism cause probably that s what is in YOUR head and not the Germans.
you only see ignorant americans cause that is where you choose to look

sorry but you are missing out. such a pitty

  • Oh boy!

I'm finding myself shocked at most of these comments. Everyone has something bad to say about everyone else but really everyone is the same. No matter where you go there will always be something bad. I was in the Navy and I went to alot of places. Regardless of my experiences every country has good people and bad people. Every country has it's own history, if not then how did it become a country in the first place? I have yet to go to Germany but I'm trying to research it and get peoples insight about it because My husband and I may be moving there very soon for his work. Some say the Germans are rude, well if your going to talk bad about them I don't blame them for ignoring you, that just tells me that they are more well mannered and more of a man for not sinking to your level. And as far as Germans talking bad on Americans, well same thing. What makes you any different? I live in Texas right now and I think people here are rude, people frustrate me so much on the road, to me it seems like every one is drunk, but that doesn't mean Texas just sucks cause I don't like something about it. Texans are very proud and I don't understand why my husband is so obsessed with Texas...I'm from Minnesota by the way.....but he is just proud of his homeland. There is nothing wrong with being proud geez. There are educated people everywhere also....I don't understand why one person says another country is so un-educated. People leave their own country to study in America all the time, then you have Americans going somewhere else to study...it's all the same. If you don't like some place, guess what fellow Americans, you don't have to go there, and if you hated having to follow the Germans laws, then you should have done your research before you went there in the first place. I love to travel, and yeah things may not always turn out the way I expect it to or what but my advice to anyone going to another country is just have respect for the locals, regardless if you agree with them or not. You are in their home, you are never going to know everything, the best thing you can do is learn from your experience. To each his own I guess

  • ignorance is bliss

lol why does everyone have to call everyone else ignorant something or other. I mean shit why do you think this world is at war right now? I don't mean the technical reason but there has to be a start right? i don't really think it's ignorance, i think it's just stubborn-ness. you have people arguing on a little website that to my understanding is to be a help for people trying to get settled in Germany, I haven't read anything on here that is actual advice. it's either america sucks, germany sucks, their rude, their fat, their stupid. I don't know about any of you but I graduated kindergarten a while ago. don't you think it's time to just except the fact that name calling and bashing peoples heritage and homelands is just ignorance in itself. I find it hard to believe that anyone here is actually that dumb-minded. Everyone can say something negative but how about someone who actually has information say for instance about a website that someone can go to to look for a place to rent, how about a German actually offer a helping hand to an American trying to make arragements to live there, like "hey mr. american I know that german landlords will make you pay way to much for rent so how bout I go with you and help you not get ripped off", then the american says "oh thank you mr german guy I would appreciate that because I have never been there before and it would be nice to have some help."
I mean maybe, just maybe this site will actually do some good for someone instead of this going back and forth garbage. we all want world peace....yeah it will most likely never happen but why not at least some people try o get along.

Ok, I live in New York, in the Buffalo area. I've lived in North Carolina, NYC, and in many other places in NY. I've been to Canada, Mexico, New Mexico, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and pretty much the whole eastern coast of the US. My mom owns a Karaoke business with her boyfriend, and that's how I met Sascha, my love from Germany. His dad was a loyal, but perverted fan of my mother's (he's currently banned from the bar.) Ever since I met Sascha, I realized how mean and egotistical Americans are compared to Germans. I've never personally been to Germany, but I've talked to most of Sascha's friends and family. He was hear about three months, and left today, so I'm very sad today. He said to me that he would have stayed and got his residency so he could stay with me, but the people here were too mean. Infact, he almost got eat up for being a foreigner. All of the people I've talked from Germany were exceptionally nice. Nicer than anyone from here that I know. And the video's his mother sent me of Germany were beautiful. All of this is making me really consider moving there. America sucks, not Germany.

This is a very interesting debate we have going here. Germany Vs. America. Pretty much all I've been seeing in this is a fight over who's country is better, more beautiful, nicer, racism status, and religious tolerance statuses. The only way the world will get better is if each person worked together to make it better. First of all, I don't get racism. I do get that it may have been brought up into people to be racist against people who a different, or even a fear of the unknown. What everyone has to remember is that people are people. We all cry, we all have feelings, and we all bleed red blood. Also, I understand that religion is a way of life for a lot of people, but in order to inhabit this planet peacefully and to happily coexist as human beings, no matter what religion a person is and what they may believe, they should thing about how they would feel if that person was to push what they believed onto them. But then the person that is getting the religion pushed on them has to stop and think about if they really and truly believed in something so much that they based their lives on it, even if others deemed it un-true or even "stupid", would they do the same thing? Not only that, but I don't even get why governments have to monitor where everyone goes. I know it's for economy and safety reason's, but I'm a strong believer in that this planet is for all of the organisms to share, and people should be able to inhabit any place as long as in that place they fallow the rules, and should not have to fill out a million papers and pay for more than traveling fees and personal expenses (food, ect.) in order to live where they want to live. People should focus more on saving our planet instead of destroying and regulating it. Fighting and monitoring are a waist of energy. We should be using that energy to help people and save what our planet gives us in resources that we so willingly take advantage of. There's this kid I met that got bought himself an ipod. When it came in the mail, he was eager to open this wonderful devise, but after about ten happy seconds, he changed his mind. He sent the ipod back, got his money back, and donated the money to starving children in Africa. It's small things like that, that if everyone did them once in a while, would make a huge difference instead of waisting time fighting over stereotypes and which country is better. They're both good and bad in their own ways, they're both from the same planet, dominated by the same species. Before judging something or someone, learn more about them and walk a mile in their shoes.

  • misunderstanding

Hi again, the recent posts on this blog are really nice and encouraging. happy I hope some day we will live in a world without prejudices where everybody is just being judged on base of his character and not because of his personality. I think the discussion accidently turned into a debate US vs. Germany... the people who bashed Germans (NY man, Viva Mexico) are prolly not American. When I lived in the US I have witnessed that some Mexican immigrants also talk bad about the Americans as Viva Mexico talks bad about Germans. I think we have to realize that there are stupid people in every group and in every group there are some people who are racist. It's not just a problem amongst people of the North but also amongst Latinos. I think prejudices against Americans or Germans are just as bad as prejudices against Mexicans. Well I hope the open minded people in every group will prevail.

I think some of you have no idea what you´re talking about.
Im german and I know, that this is a beautiful and free country.
First, I will tell you something about the stereotypes.

-Germans are ugly. You have NO idea what you´re talking about. If you think this is true, than the only german you have seen in your live is Angela Merkel and some bavarian woman. Or you´re just plain stupid to believe in such stereotypes (Remember :21st CENTURYY!!!!!)
-Germany is dirty: Of course there are some poor areas, especially in Berlin but in general, it´s not dirty, and I visited a lot of places in Germany.
-"Why can´t they enjoy their life??" Man, WE ENJOY IT, ok you know there are sad people in every country on this world. I think you´re just plain stupid to believe in such stereotypes (Remember: 21st CENTURYY!!!!!)
Why do you say Germany sucks???
We have one of the best democratic systems on EARTH and we are FREE.
So why you just shut your mouths if stereotypes are everything that leaves it. (P.S.: We dont wear leather pants only bavarian people do it some days in the year)
