How to get around in Dubai
Transportation in Dubai is run by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The aim of the RTA is to reduce emissions and congestion from traffic and it covers everything from metros, buses and trams to marine transport services.
Getting a driving license in Dubai
In Dubai you must be at least 18 years of age in order to obtain a driving licence, although if you are under 18 you can learn to drive but will not receive your licence until you turn 18. Before 2006 the police were in charge of driving tests, however, since the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have taken charge they have made the driving test more difficult to pass.
Stay on the right side of the law
In this ever expanding city, the rules and regulations regarding transport are also changing rapidly. In January 2014, the Crown Prince of Dubai laid down new traffic regulations in order to have a straightforward introduction of the tram to the roads in November of the same year.
The city itself is very car friendly. As a new city, it has been designed to accommodate cars, far more than other cities in the world. The signage makes it easy to arrive to destinations and the wide and clean streets make it an enjoyable drive. The roads and infrastructure in Dubai are controlled by the Roads Traffic Authority (RTA) who are currently working alongside the Dubai Police Traffic Department to improve the roads and make Dubai a safer place for residents and visitors.
How to rent and import a car
Dubai is best experienced on its roads. Due to the fact that public transport does not reach everywhere in the city and that the cost of taxis, although comparatively cheaper than other places in the world, does accumulate - the best thing to do is drive. Having a temporary or permanent license is necessary to drive a private car in Dubai, as visitors to the UAE are not allowed to drive private cars.
A weekend travel guide
In just two decades, Dubai has grown from desert dunes to tourist and commercial paradise. Forget ancient monuments and historic buildings - the oldest pub in Dubai, Fibber Magee’s, is just 17 years old! Everything in Dubai is done on a superlative scale, breaking records with the tallest building to the biggest shopping centre and the, soon to be, longest bridge in the world.
