The telecommunications market is one of the fastest growing sectors in South Africa. The South African network covers 99.9% of the territory and is the most developed network on the African continent.

The South African telecommunications market has evolved from a state monopoly to an open market with two land line providers and five mobile providers.

The mobile telephone market is experiencing a boom since the first introduction of mobile telephones in 1994. So is the internet sector, but people have only recently started to get their own internet accesses at home. The connections are quite expensive and slow, but internet providers are constantly improving their services.
